Vrbo's own photo guidelines and the guides that repeat them no longer agree. The Vrbo Help Center now lists 1024 x 683 px as the minimum, 3840 x 2160 px as the ideal, and a wider set of file types than older copies of the same page. Many third-party pages still quote a 20 MB cap, GIF files and landscape-only photos. This guide labels every number by where it comes from, so you know what to export for a Vrbo listing.

Why Vrbo Photo Numbers Disagree

Three things stack up. Vrbo has changed its guidelines page, and older copies still circulate with a 20 MB cap, GIF support and a landscape-only rule. Channel managers that sync photos to Vrbo add their own limits on top. And Vrbo's two sizes do not share a ratio, because 1024 x 683 is 3:2 while 3840 x 2160 is 16:9. You do not have to settle the argument: export to a size that clears every figure and it stops mattering.

What Gets a Vrbo Photo Rejected

Vrbo says photos might be rejected if they show any of the following:

Guesty's list for Vrbo adds license plates and QR codes. If you edit in the Vrbo dashboard, rejected photos show under Edit property, then Photos. If you sync through software, they appear as integration errors in your daily audit report.

How Vrbo Handles Your Photos After Upload

One Master Spec for Vrbo (and Airbnb)

  1. Export JPEG, horizontal, 3:2, at 3840 x 2560 px. That clears Vrbo's 1024 x 683 px minimum and its 3840 x 2160 px ideal. It also clears the 1200 x 800 px figure on our Airbnb photo requirements guide, so one export serves both platforms.
  2. Keep each file under 4 MB if it syncs to Airbnb through a channel manager. That is Guesty's Airbnb limit. The Vrbo page lists no cap, and the 20 MB figure comes from third parties.
  3. Upload at least 6 unique photos. For a multi-unit property, cover the exterior, interior or lobby, guest room and bathroom categories.
  4. Make every photo good enough to lead, because the AI tool may choose the hero for you.
  5. Leave out text, logos, borders, collages and filters. Shoot straight rather than in Portrait Mode.
  6. Keep an unedited original of every photo.

Fixing Vrbo Photos That Fail or Fall Flat

Most weak Vrbo photos come down to two problems: the wrong size or file type, and bad light. Both are cheap to fix before you upload.

As a worked example, a 25-photo listing with Basic HDR is 25 x $1.49, so $37.25. Adding a resize and reformat pass on the same 25 files is 25 x $0.19, so $4.75, for $42.00 in total. For market-wide ranges, see our real estate photo editing cost guide.

Edit the light, never the listing. Vrbo rejects near-duplicates and expects photos of the property guests will actually find. Our recommendation: fix exposure, windows, color and perspective, and leave out anything that changes what a guest will find, such as removing a stain, a fixture or a view.

FAQ

What size should Vrbo photos be?

Vrbo's photo guidelines say at least 1024 x 683 pixels, ideally 3840 x 2160 pixels or higher. Export a horizontal JPEG at 3840 x 2560 px (3:2) and you clear both figures, plus Airbnb's 1200 x 800 px minimum.

How many photos does a Vrbo listing need?

At least 6 unique photos must be published at all times. Fewer than 6 for more than 30 days can lead to an indefinite suspension, and duplicate photos are removed and not counted toward the total.

What file types does Vrbo accept?

The current Vrbo guidelines list JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and SVG. Some older guides and channel-manager pages still list JPEG, PNG and GIF, so JPEG is the safe choice.

Is there a Vrbo photo file size limit?

The Vrbo guidelines page we opened lists no file size cap. Guesty and Rentals United help pages quote 20 MB, and Guesty caps Airbnb syncs at 4 MB, so keep each file under 4 MB if one set of photos feeds both.

Why was my Vrbo photo rejected?

Vrbo's guidelines name black and white or sepia photos, blank or near-duplicate photos, blurry or pixelated files, close-ups, collages, documents or posters, text overlays and watermarks or borders. Rejected photos show in your Vrbo dashboard under Edit property, then Photos.
