Search "Airbnb photo size" and you get 1024 x 683 px, 1200 x 800 px, 2048 x 1365 px and even 480 x 720 px, plus file caps of 4 MB, 10 MB and 18.75 MB. They are not all wrong. Airbnb itself publishes two different minimums, and channel managers add their own limits on top. This guide labels every number by where it comes from, so you know which one to export for.

Why Airbnb Gives Two Different Minimums

The Help Center article on setting up a photo tour says photos should be at least 1024 x 683 px. The Resource Center article on taking great listing photos says at least 1200 x 800 px. It carries an update date of 8 November 2024, and the Help Center article shows no date, so we cannot tell which one Airbnb wrote last. You do not have to settle the argument. Export to the larger figure and both are covered.

Two other things add to the confusion. Channel managers that sync photos to Airbnb publish their own caps, and older blog posts keep repeating figures from years ago.

How Airbnb Actually Shows Your Photos

One Master Spec That Clears Every Version

  1. Export JPEG, horizontal, 3:2, at 2400 x 1600 px. That clears 1024 x 683, 1200 x 800 and the 2048 x 1365 px figure third-party guides recommend.
  2. Keep each file under 4 MB. That is the tightest cap quoted. If you upload straight to Airbnb, its own guidance allows up to about 10 MB.
  3. Keep the key detail inside the centre square. On a 2400 x 1600 px frame that is the middle 1600 x 1600 px, which is what a square crop keeps.
  4. Lead with your best room. Only the first 5 photos get the cover treatment.
  5. Shoot straight ahead with the flash off, then adjust brightness, contrast and highlights, and straighten the frame, as Airbnb's photo tips suggest.
  6. Keep an unedited original of every photo.

Fixing Airbnb Photos That Look Dark, Flat or Cropped Wrong

Most weak listing photos come down to two problems: the wrong size or format, and bad light. Both are cheap to fix before you upload.

As a worked example, a 30-photo listing with Basic HDR is 30 x $1.49, so $44.70. Adding a resize and reformat pass on the same 30 files is 30 x $0.19, so $5.70, for $50.40 in total. For the full pricing picture, see our real estate photo editing cost guide.

Edit the light, never the listing. Airbnb's own advice is to show guests exactly what they can expect. Our recommendation: fix exposure, windows, colour and perspective, and leave out anything that changes what a guest will find, such as removing a stain, a fixture or a view.

Listing the same property for sale as well? The rules differ, so see our MLS photo requirements guide and our Zillow photo requirements guide.

FAQ

What size should Airbnb photos be?

Airbnb Help Center says at least 1024 x 683 px, while the Airbnb Resource Center photo tips say at least 1200 x 800 px. Export at 2400 x 1600 px (3:2) and you clear both, plus the 2048 x 1365 px figure many third-party guides recommend.

Should Airbnb photos be horizontal or vertical?

Horizontal. Airbnb says the listing page shows photos in landscape and search results crop images into squares, so vertical photos lose the most. Keep the subject in the centre of a 3:2 frame.

What is the Airbnb photo file size limit?

The Airbnb Resource Center says bigger files are better, up to about 10 MB. Channel managers add their own caps, such as 4 MB in a Guesty help article and 18.75 MB in a Rentals United one, so keep each file under 4 MB if you sync.

How many photos can you upload to Airbnb?

Third-party guides say up to 100 photos per listing, and a Rentals United help page says 99 per property. We did not find a cap in the Airbnb pages we opened. Airbnb photo tour asks for at least one photo in every room or space.

Why are my Airbnb photos cropped in search results?

Airbnb crops search images into squares, and the first photo is the large one shown in search. Shoot horizontal, put your best room first and keep the key detail inside the centre square of the frame.
