Amazon's shoe rule is one of the most specific in the whole marketplace: the main image shows one shoe, toe pointing left, shot at roughly a 45° angle on pure white. Upload a pair, a side profile, or a shoe with a shadow spilling off the frame, and the listing can be suppressed even though the photo looks perfectly fine. This guide lays out the exact shoe rules, what fails most often, and the alternate shots Amazon recommends.
The numbers below follow Amazon's Shoes, Handbags and Shoe Accessories category style guide (the copy Amazon hosts publicly is the Amazon.co.uk edition, dated January 2020) together with Amazon's general image rules. Amazon can revise category rules by marketplace, so check the current style guide for your category in Seller Central before a big upload.
Main Image Requirements for Shoes
| Requirement | Standard |
|---|---|
| Number of shoes | One shoe only, never a pair |
| Which shoe | The left shoe, toe pointing left |
| Angle | 3/4 view from slightly above, within a 35–55° range (45° is the target) |
| Background | Pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 (#FFFFFF) |
| Frame fill | Shoe centered and filling at least 85% of the image area, aspect ratio close to 3:4 |
| Resolution | 1,600 px or larger on the longest side for zoom (Amazon's general minimum is 1,000 px) |
| File format | JPEG preferred; PNG, TIFF and GIF also accepted |
| Presentation | Shot flat, with no mannequin, hanger, holder or human model |
| Not allowed | Text, logos, borders, watermarks, color blocks, inset images, packaging, boxes, tags, black-and-white photos |
Everything in that table has to be true at once. For the rules that apply to every category, see our full Amazon image requirements guide; this page covers what changes for footwear.
What Gets Shoe Images Rejected
| Mistake | Why It Fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A pair of shoes in the main image | The main slot allows one shoe | Move the pair shot to an alternate slot |
| Right shoe, or toe pointing right | Wrong shoe and orientation for the main image | Reshoot with the left shoe. Do not mirror a right-shoe photo, because logos and text on the shoe flip too |
| Side, back or top view as the main | The main must be the 3/4 view | Use those angles as alternate images |
| Shadow running past the edge of the frame | Amazon prohibits shadows that extend past the side or top | Keep any shadow inside the frame, or remove it and rely on the white background |
| Visible stand, fishing line or stuffing | The shoe must not appear on a holder | Paint out the support in editing |
| Off-white or gray background | Anything short of #FFFFFF fails the check | Cut the shoe out and place it on a true white background |
| Shoe box, tags or extra accessories in frame | Only the item for sale may appear | Reshoot or remove in editing |
| Two colorways in one image | Each main image shows one colorway only | Shoot and edit each color separately |
A background that only looks white is the sneakiest of these. Our pure white background guide shows how to check it with a color picker, and if a listing is already flagged, how to fix a suppressed Amazon main image walks through the Seller Central steps.
Alternate Images: The Shot List Amazon Recommends
Alternate images are where you can show everything the main image cannot. Amazon's shoe guide allows up to eight per listing and recommends this set:
- Front: shot directly at the front of the shoe
- Back: shot directly at the heel
- Bottom: the sole, toe pointing right
- Left side: a 90° profile at the same slightly-above height as the main, toe pointing left
- Right side: a 90° profile, toe pointing right
- Top: shot straight down at the shoe, pointing right
The guide also suggests using the last alternate slot for a size chart with foot measurements, which cuts sizing returns. Unlike the main image, these slots are recommendations rather than pass-or-fail rules, but a consistent set across every SKU makes a catalog look far more professional.
Every Colorway Needs Its Own Main Image
This is the rule that quietly multiplies the workload. Amazon requires a main image for the parent listing and for every child variation, and each child main image must show only that one colorway. A sneaker in four colors is four main images before you count any alternates. Consistency matters more than perfection on any single shot: same angle, same camera height, same 85% fill, and the same white background on all of them.
Shooting each colorway identically also makes editing faster and cheaper. Our footwear photography tips cover the lighting, level and lace habits that keep shoe photos easy to cut out.
What Editing Costs for Shoes (2026 Rates)
Getting a shoe onto true white with a clean edge around laces, eyelets and straps is a clipping path job. PixelTrim Studio prices it by complexity, and footwear sits in the top tier:
| Tier | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | $0.39/image | Plain products with solid edges |
| Medium | $0.69/image | Multi-part products with handles or straps |
| Complex | $0.99/image | Intricate shapes, including footwear |
As a worked example, a main image plus five alternates is six images, or about $5.94 per colorway at the complex rate. Four colorways come to about $23.76 before any bundle rate. Turnaround is 24–48 hours with one free revision round. If you are comparing providers for a full footwear line, our shoe photo editing service guide covers what to check before you commit.

FAQ
What angle does Amazon require for a shoe main image?
A 3/4 view from slightly above, with the toe pointing left, within a 35–55° range. Most sellers aim for 45°. Straight side, back and top views are not allowed as the main image, but they work well as alternate images.
Can I show a pair of shoes in the main image?
No. The main image must show a single shoe. Show the pair in an alternate image instead.
Does the main image have to be the left shoe?
Yes. Amazon's shoe guide calls for one left shoe with the toe pointing left. Avoid mirroring a photo of a right shoe, because logos and lettering on the shoe would appear reversed.
What size should Amazon shoe images be?
Amazon's shoe guide asks for at least 1,600 px on the longest side so zoom works, with the shoe filling 85% of the frame. Amazon's general minimum is 1,000 px, so shooting at 1,600 px or larger satisfies both.
Do I need a separate main image for each shoe color?
Yes. Every color variation needs its own main image showing only that colorway, in addition to the main image for the parent listing.
