Most sellers who get an Etsy listing flagged or a photo quietly rejected assume it's a size problem — wrong pixels, wrong file type. Usually it isn't. Etsy's content policy for listing photos is separate from its size spec, and it's the part most sellers never actually read: whose photo it has to be, whether AI-generated images need disclosure, and what can't appear in the frame at all. This guide covers that policy layer — for the exact pixel dimensions and file specs, see our Etsy image size guide.
Rule 1: It Has to Be Your Own Photo or Video
Etsy's Seller Policy is explicit on this: listing images must be your own photographs or video content — not stock photos, not artistic renderings, and not photos copied from another seller's listing or a manufacturer's catalog. There are limited exceptions for custom items and items made with a production partner's help, but the default rule assumes the photo shows a specific unit you actually have in hand or produced yourself.
This is stricter than it sounds in practice. A seller who lists a mass-produced supply item (beads, ribbon, blank tumblers) sometimes reaches for a manufacturer's product shot because it looks cleaner than a phone photo — that's the exact use case the policy is aimed at. Etsy wants buyers to see the actual item they'd receive, not a marketing image of the category.
Rule 2: AI-Generated Images Need Disclosure
Since a January 2026 policy update, sellers using AI-generative tools anywhere in their listing images must tick a disclosure checkbox on the listing form ("I used AI-generative technology"). This applies whether the AI was used for the product itself (digital art, printable designs) or just to touch up a photo.
One detail trips sellers up: for a standard physical-product listing, the first image still has to show the real, finished item — an AI-generated "hero shot" standing in for the actual product is a policy violation even with disclosure ticked, unless the listing is explicitly for a personalized or made-to-order piece where that's the norm.
Rule 3: No Contact Info, Pricing, or Off-Platform Links in the Photo
Etsy prohibits listing photos that bake in an email address, phone number, website URL, or price — anything that could route a buyer to transact outside Etsy. A shop name or logo watermark is fine on its own; the line is whether the text is functioning as a way to pull the sale off-platform.
Rule 4: Watermarks Are Allowed but Cost You Reach
Unlike Amazon or eBay, Etsy doesn't ban watermarks outright. The tradeoff is more about visibility than policy risk: watermarked images are ineligible for Etsy's Offsite Ads program and get filtered out by Google Shopping and Meta's advertising platforms, since both treat visible overlay text as a quality signal against the image. If free external traffic through Offsite Ads or Google Shopping matters to your shop, a clean, watermark-free main image is worth more than the light copyright protection a logo overlay provides.
Rule 5: Photos Must Accurately Represent the Item
Country of origin, materials, condition, and any attribute you list has to match what the photo actually shows. This mostly matters for vintage and handmade categories, where sellers sometimes photograph a "similar" reference piece instead of the specific item for sale — that's treated the same as a stock-photo violation.
Quick Reference: What's Allowed vs. Discouraged vs. Not Allowed
| In the photo | Status |
|---|---|
| Your own photo/video of the actual item | Required |
| AI-generated image, disclosed on the listing form | Allowed (with disclosure) |
| Shop name or brand logo watermark | Allowed, but blocks Offsite Ads / Google Shopping eligibility |
| Manufacturer stock photo or another seller's image | Not allowed (limited exceptions) |
| Email, phone number, price, or off-platform URL in the image | Not allowed |
| AI-generated "hero shot" as the only proof of a physical item | Not allowed for standard listings |
How This Differs from Amazon and eBay
Amazon and eBay's image rules are mostly technical — pure white background, exact frame-fill percentage, no props in the main shot (see our Amazon image requirements guide and eBay image requirements guide). Etsy barely regulates the visual style at all — lifestyle backdrops and props are fine — and instead focuses on authenticity and disclosure: is this really your photo, is it really the item, and did you disclose if AI touched it. Sellers cross-listing the same catalog on all three platforms need to pass Amazon/eBay's technical bar and Etsy's authenticity bar separately; one clean white-background photo set doesn't automatically clear both.
Pre-Upload Compliance Checklist
- Confirm every photo is one you took or had taken of the actual item, not a stock or manufacturer image
- If any image used AI generation or heavy AI touch-up, tick the disclosure box on the listing form
- For standard (non-custom) listings, make sure the first image is a real photo of the finished physical item
- Check the image for baked-in contact info, pricing, or URLs before uploading
- Skip the watermark on your main image if Offsite Ads or Google Shopping traffic matters to your shop
- Confirm materials, condition, and origin claims match what the photo actually shows
Once the content side is compliant, the editing side is what makes the photo convert — clean cutouts, consistent color, and a grid that looks cohesive across your shop. Our Etsy background removal guide covers that in detail, and our clipping path service handles it at scale — manual, pen-tool editing from $0.39/image with a 24–48h turnaround.

FAQ
Can I use a manufacturer's product photo on my Etsy listing?
Generally no. Etsy requires your own photograph or video of the actual item, with limited exceptions for custom items and production-partner-made goods. A manufacturer's catalog shot is treated the same as a stock photo violation.
Do I have to disclose AI-generated images on Etsy?
Yes. Since Etsy's January 2026 policy update, listings using AI-generative technology in any image must have the AI-disclosure checkbox ticked on the listing form, regardless of whether the AI touched the product itself or just the presentation.
Are watermarks against Etsy's rules?
No, watermarks aren't prohibited outright. The tradeoff is that watermarked images become ineligible for Etsy's Offsite Ads program and are filtered out by Google Shopping and Meta advertising, so a clean main image is usually worth more than the watermark's light copyright benefit.
Can I show an AI-generated mockup as my listing's main photo?
Not for a standard physical-product listing — the first image still has to show the real, finished item. AI-generated hero shots are more commonly accepted for digital downloads or explicitly personalized/made-to-order items where a mockup is the norm.
How is this different from Etsy's image size requirements?
Size requirements (pixel dimensions, file format, file size) are a separate technical spec — see our Etsy image size guide for that. This guide covers the content and authenticity policy: whose photo it is, AI disclosure, and what can't appear in frame.
